THE DAVID R. MCCANN RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS STUDENT CHAIR
The St. John’s Gay Men’s Chorus proudly offers an annual seat to a student who wishes to be a welcomed and valued member of our chorus.
THE DAVID R. MCCANN RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS STUDENT CHAIR
Named in honour of David R. McCann, whose random act of kindness, coupled with the generosity of the Vancouver Men’s Chorus, inspired the formation of our Board of Directors in June 2018. Their generous donation, which was given for no other reason than a desire to be kind, financially launched the St. John’s Gay Men’s Chorus. This chair strives to reflect that act and support a young man in finding his voice, his place and his pride in being a member of our community. It is more than an award. It is a challenge to the recipient to display leadership and innovation, and reminds the choir that kindness begets kindness. It is also a reminder of our collective stewardship to reflect this principle in all of our activities.
2020 RECIPIENT - SIMON YAP
Yap, that is him! Simon is a student from Malaysia graduating from MUN with a Civil Engineering degree and enjoys singing. He started his singing journey back when he was 14 years old, where he joined the school’s choir and participated in a few choral competitions. In 2018, he picked up his long-forgotten joy of being in a choir and joined the SJGMC. This gave him a huge opportunity to be able to be involved with the queer community, as well as meeting so many talented people along his way. Simon is honoured to be the recipient of the Random Act of Kindness Student Chair and hopes to spread kindness and generosity to everyone.
